What to Expect from Drug Rehab Centers

Dr. Jeffrey Berman, MD By April 26, 2018

Worried about what you will encounter in rehab? Despite what movies and TV have showed over the years, rehab centers in NJ offer a safe and comfortable space that’s designed to foster an atmosphere perfect for learning and staying calm.

The Day You Check In

When checking in to drug rehab centers in NJ, you will experience a fairly standard intake process that everyone goes through when they check in. On that day, you will fill out paperwork, be assessed for medical and mental health, get a tour of the facility, be assigned and showed to your room, and conduct a contraband check with a staff member.

When quitting a substance, most addicts will experience withdrawal symptoms. Because those withdrawal symptoms are often so difficult that patients won’t be able to focus on anything else other than the withdrawal. That is what detox is for – getting the drugs and alcohol out of your system, hopefully for the last time you will ever have to do so.

Therapies and Counseling

In rehab, there are a number of therapies and counseling that you will participate in. The majority of patients will go through most of the following types of therapy and counseling:

Behavioral Therapy – This consists of two types of therapies, which are cognitive and dialectical. As the name implies, the intent of these therapies is to help patients change the way they behave on a day to day basis.

Talk Therapy – It might sound overly simplistic, but talk therapy is used to give addicts a space that they can feel listened to. In these sessions, patients are urged to simply talk about their feelings and anything that might be bothering them. The therapist’s role in talk therapy isn’t to help fix those problems, but just to listen and engage.

Group Meetings – Group meetings are used to help addicts understand that they are not alone in their situation. In these sessions, addicts get together and discuss their addictions and anything that may have resulted from the addiction.

Family Counseling – Even if you feel like you have no one who cares, your addiction has a huge impact on your loved ones. Family counseling at Discovery gives your family a place to heal from the damage caused by the addiction and to help rebuild the relationships and trust that may have been lost or broken.

If you feel you have lost control of your ability to stop yourself from using drugs or alcohol, Discovery will use the above therapies and more to help end the addiction and return you to being the person you used to be. Contact us today to learn more and sign up for treatment.
