Sober Living in New Jersey | How Can I Stay Sober in College?

Dr. Jeffrey Berman, MD By December 21, 2017

College is a time of learning, growth, and self-discovery. Although, once you have embarked on sober living in New Jersey, it can be difficult to see past all of the parties that come with college and oftentimes include alcohol or drugs. While this can put off those who have struggled with addiction, you can still be sober in college. It is simply a matter of having the right mindset and being comfortable with yourself.

Learn to Be OK with Being Around Alcohol and Not Consuming It

If you are not living in a dry dorm or not attending a dry school, facing alcohol is something you will have to accept. This is especially important if you choose to continue spending time with friends who drink moderately.

For some, being OK around alcohol can be easy. However, it is important not to underestimate people and places that can present potential triggers for relapse. On days where temptation is more difficult to deal with, know that you can simply remove yourself from any situation and go home. There is no weakness or shame in admitting that you can’t be somewhere or with someone. You should never be around alcohol if you are not ready to.

Be OK with Spending Time Alone

Is college during sober living in New Jersey possible?

Oftentimes, you will find that when you remove yourself from a situation, the desire to drink is gone. Remember that this is a good thing. Reinforce that feeling of not being tempted because, in college, this can lead to many situations where you are alone.

Loving yourself and your own company is a powerful thing, not just for those in recovery but for everyone. There are many activities that you can do with others in college that do not involve drinking, and you are sure to find people who enjoy those things. However, be ready for it to not always be that way. There will still be those who would rather party and drink.
