Drug, Alcohol, and Treatment Resources in Staten Island, New York 10304

Getting help for an addiction can be overwhelming. There are many different treatment options available, but you may not know which kind of treatment is the best fit for you. On top of that, you’re probably not aware of all the treatment resources available in your area. Luckily, we’ve created this comprehensive guide to treatment resources in Staten Island so you can get started on your road to recovery today.

1. Drug, Alcohol and Treatment Resources in Staten Island

Staten Island has a number of treatment centers that offer programs for drug and alcohol addiction. In fact, there are thirteen rehabs in Staten Island and forty rehabs within 10 miles of the island.

Some of these treatment centers offer inpatient treatment, including long-term inpatient treatment, and some offer outpatient treatment. Each treatment center offers a wide variety of programs to help you recover from your addiction.

Some of the programs offered by these rehabilitation centers include: medically supervised detox, medically assisted recovery, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, 12 step meetings (AA and NA), cognitive behavioral therapy, holistic health practices such as meditation and yoga, and treatment programs for co-occurring diagnoses such as PTSD, eating disorders, depression and anxiety.

2. Staten Island Drug Abuse Statistics – You’re Not Alone in this Struggle

When you’re battling with addiction it can feel like you’re the only one struggling, but the truth is that addiction is a widespread and common issue. In 2018, 650 people went to Staten Island area emergency rooms for drug-related problems. 744 people were admitted to Staten Island area hospitals for drug-related issues, and 105 people died from drug overdoses.

Though addiction has always been a problem, the rate of addiction has been steadily rising for many years. Between 2010 and 2014 the number of ER visits for drug-related problems rose 73%, and the administration of the drug Naloxone – which is used to treat overdoses – increased 57%.

The county in which Staten Island has found has the highest rate of drug overdoses in the state, despite having the smallest population of all the boroughs. The population most likely to die from a drug overdose is white males, but the problem of addiction certainly isn’t limited to white men.

Of the people admitted to the hospital for drug-related problems between 2016 and 2019, 33% were women, 67% were men. All racial and ethnic backgrounds and ages were represented, though the most common ages were between 45 and 64, followed closely by people between 18 and 44.

These statistics show that addiction impacts people of all genders, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and ages. You’re definitely not alone in this struggle!

3. Recovery Meetings Near Me in Staten Island

One of the treatment modalities that people find helpful is participation in recovery meetings. The most common recovery meetings are 12-step based programs like AA and NA, but there are other types of recovery meetings as well, like SMART recovery.

12-Step recovery meetings, AA and NA, focus on the 12 step model outlined in the book Alcoholics Anonymous. These meetings focus on reading 12-step related literature, discussing strategies for staying sober, and working the 12-steps.

The SMART recovery program focuses on developing healthy coping mechanisms to replace the use of drugs and alcohol. Meetings focus on developing these coping mechanisms using the strategies laid out in the program’s materials. A list of SMART recovery meetings around Staten Island can be found here.

Recovery meetings provide a community for recovering alcoholics and addicts, which many find essential to maintaining recovery. Staten Island has a thriving recovery community with hundreds of meetings and recovery related events.

In addition, Staten Island has multiple other recovery groups that are not associated with a specific recovery program.

4. Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment in Staten Island

When choosing a treatment center, the biggest question is whether you want an inpatient or outpatient program.

With inpatient programs, you check into a facility and stay there for a prescribed period of time, usually between 30 and 90 days. Medical treatments, individual therapy, group therapy, and introduction to a recovery program all happen while you live at the facility.

Another type of inpatient program is long-term residential. In these programs, participants usually stay for between 6 and 12 months for more intensive treatment.

Outpatient treatment programs provide more flexibility. All treatment services and programs are all available at a location the participant can access during certain hours of the day. These treatment programs typically require that participants attend daily or weekly programs centered around recovery from addiction. Participants in outpatient programs continue to reside at their homes for the duration of treatment.

Studies have shown that outpatient treatment can be just as effective as inpatient treatment. The effectiveness of the program depends more on the addiction services offered than inpatient or outpatient.

5. Getting Help in Staten Island: How to Choose the Right Facility

Once you’ve decided whether you’ll do inpatient or outpatient treatment, the next decision you’ll face is choosing the facility that best meets your needs.

When researching a facility, be sure to focus on what programs and services they offer. A good rehab will offer individual therapy, group therapy sessions, family therapy sessions, and medically assisted treatment at the very least.

If you’re looking for services beyond these basics – like AA/NA meetings, SMART recovery meetings, yoga, massage therapy, hypnotherapy, and others – seek out facilities that provide the services that you think will support your recovery.

Which rehabilitation center is right for you is a personal decision that depends on what addiction services you’ll need and want to access to during the course of treatment.

6. Mental Health Services in Staten Island

Research has found that many people who struggle with addiction also suffer from mental health issues. The link between mental health and substance abuse is a well documented phenomenon known as co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis.

It’s estimated that about 50% of the people with mental illness will struggle with addiction. It is also estimated that about 50% of people who struggle with addiction have a co-occurring mental illness. Mental illnesses that are commonly associated with addiction include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and eating disorders.

More than half of the people who struggle with co-occurring mental illnesses do not receive proper treatment for their co-occurring mental illness during their stay at a rehabilitation center for addiction, so if you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue or suspect that you have a mental health issue it’s crucial to find a rehab that will accommodate your dual diagnosis.
