There’s a quote from Bukowski that sums up addiction perfectly:
“That’s the problem with drinking, I thought, as I poured myself a drink. If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens you drink to make something happen.”
―Charles Bukowski, Women
Alcohol and drugs come with their own lifestyles attached and to effectively leave the addiction, you will have to also leave the lifestyle which enabled it.
There are some really effective addiction treatment in New Jersey, Florida, and the rest of the United States. Long-term rehab in NJ can be challenging, but peer support and positive peer pressure, can make all the difference. Many of our friends, family, and even coworkers enabled our addictions, so forming a new network will reinforce clean living.
There was a guy in the stoner comedy Half-Baked played by Jon Stewart who was only interested in doing things while high on marijuana. So many of our peers have lifestyles like that. They might just see drugs or alcohol as part of everyday experiences. Beers at a barbecue, drugs at a party. When you are attempting to get clean, having those substances in the background all the time can be a challenge to deal with. But, if you form a peer group of people who understand that challenge, you can fight those temptations together and have fun events that don’t interfere with your recovery.
Get on the Right Path
Whatever point on the road to recovery that you’re on, the most important part is starting. Once you accept that you can’t do it on your own you can allow others in to help you. There’s a hard truth ahead: the change you need might not be the change you want. A peer group of people who have walked the same path that you’re on can help make this easier.
