Can Alcohol Rehab Really Help Me Quit?

Dr. Jeffrey Berman, MD By May 19, 2018

Although many people might try to talk about rehab like it is ineffective and useless, those people just do not have any clue what they are talking about. It is similar to those who believe medicines are not helpful or that therapy is a joke – they are just plain wrong.

Going through alcohol rehab in NJ is highly recommended to those who have an addiction to alcohol or for those who are starting to notice that they might be developing alcohol use disorder (which is the proper name for alcoholism). Alcohol rehab has already helped uncountable numbers of people quit their substance abuse, and it can certainly help you too.

Detox the Alcohol Out

When you first arrive at an alcohol rehab facility for inpatient care, you will very likely have to go through a detox program before you can start taking classes and having scheduled discussions with therapists and other people in the facility. When going through detox, the only thing that you need to focus on is getting all of the alcohol out of your system. Detox at a rehab center is far preferable than just trying to do it on your own since the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol can be especially severe. Detoxing at a rehab center lets you do so under the supervision of a trained and experienced staff who will work diligently to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible during that difficult time.

Treating Alcoholism in Rehab

After going through detox, you will then have a regular schedule that will keep you fairly busy on most days. Treatment for alcohol use disorder includes things like group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family gatherings, artistic expression, outdoor activities, social events, and much more. Some of the treatments will directly focus on treating the alcohol abuse while other treatments are used to discover more about oneself and why the alcoholism started in the first place. Other classes and activities also teach patients that they can have fun and be social without needing to use alcohol as a crutch.
